US experts warn against drugs touted by Donald Trump

The US National Institutes of Health has warned Covid-19 patients not to take a two-drug combination that Donald Trump has frequently touted as a possible treatment for people who have contracted the illness.

Experts convened by NIH said coronavirus patients should not use a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin due to possible “toxicities”, meaning the risk of serious side effects, including poisoning.

Over the past month, the US president has used his news conferences to promote the combination of the antimalarial drug and antibiotic as a possible “game changer”, sparking criticism from many health experts.
