The UK has surpassed Italy to become the European country with the highest number of deaths from coronavirus, according to British government data released on Tuesday.
The daily death toll figures released by the Department of Health and based on people testing positive for Covid-19 showed 29,427 deaths in the UK, compared to 29,316 in Italy.
But official data showed that the health department figures underestimated the deadly impact of the virus. The Office for National Statistics said on Tuesday that 42,000 more people than normal had died in the UK since the virus outbreak began in mid-March.
