The coronavirus has stymied the world’s greatest design showcase. Salone del Mobile Milano is postponed, at least until June. For creatives, collectors and dealers, that means chaos — at least in the short term.
“No other design week matters as much as Milan,” says Shay Alkalay of Raw Edges, one of London’s most out-there design houses, a small operation dependent on commissions from big names such as Louis Vuitton (elegant collapsible chairs) and Stella McCartney (migraine-inducing floor tiles).
The April fair is where the design world’s important deals are made, and crucial for independent designers like Alkalay. The organisers have rescheduled for June but, in the meantime, designers are losing time and money.
