The president’s renewed insistence of a forceful crackdown followed upheaval in New York City on Monday night that saw peaceful demonstrations overshadowed by violence and looting, prompting Bill de Blasio, the city’s mayor, to extend its curfew.
The unrest, including the looting of a flagship Macy’s department store in Manhattan, led officials to bring forward the start of the city’s curfew by three hours to 8pm for the rest of the week.
