Trump accuses Democrats of trying to ‘steal the election’

President renews attacks on voting by mail after securing Republican presidential nomination

Donald Trump accused Democrats of trying to “steal the election” during an unscheduled appearance at the Republican National Convention shortly after he received the party’s presidential nomination on Monday.

In a surprise address on the first day of the party’s convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, Mr Trump renewed his unsubstantiated attacks on voting by mail in front of a small crowd of delegates who greeted his remarks with whooping and cheering.

Mr Trump said: “This is stealing millions of votes. We’re going to win this election. The only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.”
