The Premier League has abruptly terminated its $700m broadcast deal in China, in a further blow to clubs in the world’s most valuable domestic football competition that is already facing huge losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
English football’s top tier said on Thursday it had ended a three-year contract due to expire in 2022 with Chinese digital broadcaster PPTV, which is owned by Jiangsu-based online retailer Suning.
The move comes after PPTV withheld payment of an instalment due to the Premier League in March, at a time when matches were postponed because of the pandemic, according to two people with knowledge of the incident.
