Police in Vienna said several people had been injured and one person killed in a shooting incident in the city centre which authorities said was a terrorist attack.
The attack appeared to have been perpetrated by multiple actors, one official added.
Police tweeted that at 8pm local time shots were fired by a number of gunmen armed with rifles at six locations in the city. One person had died and several people had been badly injured, one of them a policemen. One of the gunmen had been shot dead by police.
