US prepares for election turmoil as divisive campaign comes to end

Retailers including Target and Tiffany board up stores amid fears of unrest

Americans have started streaming to the polls on the east coast and in the Midwest after one of the most divisive presidential races in modern US history as Donald Trump fights for four more years in the White House.

Retailers prepared for possible unrest by boarding up stores ahead of election day, marking the end of a surreal campaign in the shadow of a pandemic that has claimed more than 231,000 American lives and resulted in Mr Trump’s own hospitalisation with Covid-19.
