Barr to step down as attorney-general after attacks from Trump

Resignation comes after president criticises top government lawyer as ‘big disappointment’

William Barr has announced he is resigning as US attorney-general, just weeks after he said he had found no evidence of the widespread election irregularities claimed by outgoing president Donald Trump.

Mr Trump announced Mr Barr’s departure on Twitter, just minutes after president-elect Joe Biden formally received the 270 Electoral College votes required to be sworn in on January 20.
