Facebook and Twitter temporarily lock Trump’s accounts amid unrest

Social media platforms take aim at the US president for his response to supporters who stormed the Capitol

Facebook and Twitter have temporarily locked Donald Trump out of his accounts after he repeated false claims of widespread election fraud while a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol building in Washington, in the most significant social media crackdown yet on a global leader.

Facebook said on Tuesday evening that it was freezing the president’s official page for 24 hours, “meaning he will lose the ability to post on the platform during that time”, citing “two policy violations”.

Twitter also said that it was suspending the president’s account for 12 hours for “repeated and severe violations” of its civic integrity policies, which ban misleading tweets designed to interfere in the election process.
