Global Covid-19 death toll tops 5m but underestimates true figure, say experts

US and Brazil lead tally of confirmed deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data

The number of confirmed Covid-19 deaths worldwide has topped 5m, although experts say that number is likely to be a significant underestimate of the pandemic’s true death toll.

At least 5,001,871 individuals have died with coronavirus since records began, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University seen on Monday. The total of confirmed cases is almost 247m.

Globally, the US leads the tally of confirmed deaths, with almost 750,000 casualties, according to JHU data. Brazil is second, with just over 600,000. In the European region, Russia accounts for about 234,000 deaths, while the UK and Italy count 141,000 and 132,000, respectively.
