Covid testing requirements to be eased in England for asymptomatic cases

Official guidance to take confirmatory PCR tests will be suspended from January 11

Coronavirus testing rules in England will be eased next week, as concerns rise over the country’s testing capacity and the continued impact of staff shortages on critical public services.

Under changes announced by the UK Health Security Agency on Wednesday, starting from January 11, individuals who are asymptomatic and who test positive using a lateral flow device will be expected to report their result and self-isolate but will not be advised to take a follow-up PCR test.

Previous government guidance stated: “Anyone whose rapid test comes back positive or who develops Covid-19 symptoms should self-isolate and take a confirmatory PCR test to verify the result.”
