Australian minister flies to Solomon Islands for urgent talks on China pact

Mid-election trip to Honiara highlights western alarm at draft security deal with Beijing

Australia’s minister for the Pacific has flown to the Solomon Islands to urgently discuss its plans for a security pact with China that could give Beijing a strategic hold in the region.

The rare mid-election diplomatic trip highlights the alarm among US regional allies following the leak last month of the draft security deal between Solomons prime minister Manasseh Sogavare’s government and China.

The Financial Times reported last week that the White House’s top Asia official Kurt Campbell would travel to the Solomon Islands this month along with the top Asia official at the US state department.
