Beijing decries India’s ‘frequent’ probes after raid of phonemaker Vivo

New Delhi is putting increasing pressure on Chinese tech groups following border clashes in 2020

Beijing has criticised New Delhi for launching “frequent investigations” into Chinese companies operating in India, after financial authorities raided Chinese mobile phonemaker Vivo over money-laundering allegations.India’s Enforcement Directorate, the finance ministry’s enforcement agency, searched 44 Vivo dealerships and production sites on Tuesday. Vivo said it was co-operating with Indian authorities.

The raid was New Delhi’s latest action against a Chinese-owned company, after authorities accused Xiaomi, another device maker, of unlawfully remitting more than $700mn abroad in May. Xiaomi denied wrongdoing.

Wang Xiaojian, spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in India, said officials were closely following Vivo’s case.
