China approves $69bn Broadcom-VMware merger

Beijing clears regulatory hurdle holding up tech deal as trade tension eases with Washington

China has approved the merger between US chipmaker Broadcom and cloud software company VMware, clearing the last regulatory hurdle that has hung over the $69bn deal.

Beijing approved the deal with some “restrictive conditions”, according to a statement from its anti-monopoly regulator on Tuesday, in a sign China is working to ease trade tensions with the US amid broader slowdown in its domestic economic growth.

The Financial Times reported last month that Beijing was considering holding up the megamerger, first announced in May 2022, after the US tightened rules to block Chinese access to high-end chips.
