Northern lights: more luminous treats may lie in store

The question of how we classify and weather such geomagnetic storms needs revisiting

I was idly checking the street WhatsApp chat on Saturday morning when my blood ran cold. “Can anyone else see this?” a neighbour had posted at 11.20pm the previous night. “I think I can see pink and green in the sky . . . ”

A string of photos from London neighbours showed ghostly columns of pale pink and green light above the rooftops. I had missed an absolute sitter — the opportunity to see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, in my own backyard.
