Chery will double down on the UK market with a fourth brand targeting younger buyers as the Chinese state-owned carmaker also plans to open its European headquarters in Liverpool.
The group, which also owns the Omoda and Jaecoo brands as well as its eponymous marque, said on Wednesday that the new Lepas brand will launch in the UK in the next few months. The new model has been designed specifically for European markets and will be built on a new vehicle platform for electric vehicles and hybrids.
The UK has attracted an influx of Chinese brands in recent years due to the lack of both higher tariffs and a homegrown mass-market car manufacturer, but Chery’s rapid expansion in particular has shocked rivals.
