Russian oil tanker docks in Cuba despite US blockade

Donald Trump allows shipment, but its crude cargo offers only a temporary lifeline for the crisis-hit country

A sanctioned Russian tanker carrying about 700,000 barrels of crude arrived in Cuba on Tuesday, as the US relaxed a de facto energy embargo imposed on the Caribbean island.

The Russian-flagged Anatoly Kolodkin docked in Matanzas, according to vessel-tracking service Marine Traffic, delivering Cuba its first oil shipment since January 9 as the Communist-run island faces a severe humanitarian crisis.

The Trump administration has sought to pile pressure on the Cuban regime following the capture by US special forces of Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro on January 3.
