Donald Trump said he wanted Syria to take on Hizbollah as he expressed frustration with Israel’s military offensive against the militant group in Lebanon.
The US president suggested it would be better that Syria’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took power after overthrowing the regime of Bashar al-Assad in 2024, fight Hizbollah rather than Israel, which has been waging a war in Lebanon since March.
“If Israel can’t do the job, without killing everyone else, he’ll [al-Sharaa] do the job. Syria will do the job,” Trump said ahead of his bilateral meeting with the Emir of Qatar at the G7 summit in Evian.
