Sir Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as prime minister amid a collapse in his popularity less than two years after he swept the Labour Party back to power with a promise to rebuild Britain.
Starmer said on Monday: “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question and I accept that answer with good grace.”
He said his decisions had always been about putting the country first. “That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he added.
