Donald Trump played down the importance of the financial statements at the centre of a civil fraud lawsuit as he took a tumultuous turn on the witness stand that provoked several rebukes from the judge and turned a New York courtroom into a rambunctious political theatre.
At one point, an irritated Judge Arthur Engoron threatened to remove the former president, telling his attorney: “I beseech you to control him, if you can. If you can’t, I will.”
Trump’s lawyer Christopher Kise said he thought the court “should grant the former president of the US . . . a little latitude to explain himself”. Amid the chaos, Trump shook his head and declared: “This is a very unfair trial. I hope the public is watching.”
