Warehouse operators turn to entertainment and food facilities to attract workers

Companies build basketball courts and sites with beehives as unions call for pay increases

Warehouse companies are introducing football pitches, ice cream vans and beehives to industrial sites, as operators try to lure workers to the gruelling business of loading and unloading packages.

While industry wages have risen to attract workers, warehouse companies dealing with rising costs and already thin margins still face staffing problems as workers are deterred from physically demanding jobs inside drab warehouse environments.

With ecommerce expected to continue growing, developers say they are seeing demand from warehouse operators across Europe for investments in entertainment, food and other facilities more commonly offered by higher-paying white-collar employers.
