Samsung’s $16.5bn chipmaking deal with Tesla is set to be a crucial test of the Korean tech group’s ability to meet the high demands of Elon Musk while making the corporate changes needed to revive its struggling semiconductor business.

The eight-year deal announced on Monday for Samsung to manufacture the AI6 chip at its new fabrication plant in Taylor City, Texas, has sparked talk of a recovery in the Korean conglomerate’s contracting chipmaking division, which has been dogged by a failure to secure big clients amid persistent production issues.
