This autumn Electronic Arts will launch its latest attempt at lessening the video game company’s dependence on its 30-year old behemoth franchise. It’s an open question whether it will succeed or flounder like its last gambit.
EA boasts a lot of pedigreed games, like Populous and The Bard’s Tale. More recently it known for megahit franchises like The Sims, Need For Speed and Mass Effect.
But its dominant product — the equivalent to Meta’s Facebook or Alphabet’s Google — has for years been its FIFA football franchise. This is one of the most lucrative in the history of gaming, and accounts for about 70 per cent of EA’s profits.
