What is antifa, the ‘terrorist’ group targeted by Donald Trump?

The White House says there is a ‘leftwing terror threat’ that could destroy the US but the data may show otherwise

Donald Trump has doubled down on his campaign against “the radical left” at a White House roundtable on antifa, the anti-fascist movement that he has proscribed as a terrorist organisation.

Flanked by prominent members of his cabinet around a large table, the president on Wednesday said: “It should be clear to all Americans that we have a very serious leftwing terror threat in our country, radicals associated with the domestic terror group antifa.”

Recounting incidents of violence in US cities, he added, “these are people that want to destroy our country. We’re not going to let it happen.”
