Edgar Alfonseca was delighted to become a father. But his delight was quickly tempered by the “astounding” cost of child care in his home town of New York.
“It’s just astronomical,” said Alfonseca, a civil servant. He found himself paying $1,600 a month for a nursery place during his son’s first two years — the equivalent of “an additional rent”.
He also helps his mother, who is struggling to pay for groceries, utilities and medical care. “She’s living from Social Security cheque to Social Security cheque,” he said. “She’s always in the red, every month.”
