UK fuel duty set to rise for first time in more than 15 years

Previous increase came in 2011 as successive chancellors curried favour with motorists

Chancellor Rachel Reeves plans to hit UK motorists with a rise in fuel duty from September after announcing a roadmap in the Budget for phasing out the 5p cut introduced after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The move will mark the first increase in fuel duty in more than 15 years and risks stoking anger among voters long used to governments deferring increases in petrol and diesel taxes.

While delivering the Budget to MPs, Reeves said “the cost of travelling to and from work is still too expensive” and framed an extension of the 5p-per-litre cut until September as providing relief for motorists.
