Boeing has completed its long-awaited $4.7bn takeover of Spirit AeroSystems, paving the way for rival Airbus to take over some of the aerospace supplier’s operations, including in Northern Ireland.
The deal, involving a complex carve-up of Spirit’s global operations between the two planemakers, has taken more than 18 months to conclude.
Boeing said it would acquire all of Spirit’s Boeing-related commercial operations, including fuselages for the 737 programme. Spirit built the door panel that blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max in January 2024, triggering the US aviation giant’s decision to reabsorb a supplier it had spun off in 2005.
