Is Christmas as good for the UK economy as it used to be?

It used to be the most wonderful time of year for the retail and hospitality sectors, but consumer behaviour is shifting

For Britain’s largest tinsel maker, Christmas 2025 finished many months ago.

Preparations are currently under way for the next two years of festivities, says Jonathan Hughes, joint managing director at Festive Productions, which produces around 2mn metres of tinsel at its site in Cwmbran, south Wales, each year. 

“Our showroom for 2026 [opened] at the start of December,” he says. “By March next year we’ll know what the colours and trends for 2027 will be. We’ve already got teams thinking about ranges.”
