Apple sits out AI arms race to play kingmaker between Google and OpenAI

Multibillion-dollar deal to secure Gemini models reflects cautious approach to infrastructure spending

Apple is sitting out the costly race to build AI models and infrastructure, as the iPhone-maker becomes a potential kingmaker among tech rivals seeking to dominate the new industry.

This week, the Silicon Valley giant announced its most consequential move in AI so far through a deal to use Google’s Gemini models to power features for the iPhone and improve its Siri voice assistant.

The deal would be structured in the form of a cloud computing contract, which could lead to Apple paying several billion dollars to Google over time, a person familiar with the agreement told the FT.
