During two years of Middle East conflict, the Houthis stood out as the most disruptive and resilient member of Iran’s so-called “axis of resistance”, firing missiles and drones at Israel while wreaking havoc with attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
But now that the axis’s leader and patron is in a battle for survival, with Iran pounded day and night by US and Israeli warplanes, the Houthis have stayed on the sidelines.
Some analysts say the group is licking its wounds after being battered by weeks of intense US bombardment last year, and holding out the hope of a deal with Saudi Arabia.
