How Trump’s attack on Iran risks dragging US into Middle East ‘quagmire’

US president who pledged to end America’s forever wars has started another Middle East conflict with no easy off-ramps

Three weeks into Donald Trump’s Iran offensive, the US military has bombed thousands of targets and has “obliterated” the Iranian regime and its military capabilities, in the words of the US president. And yet the war’s end appears more distant than ever.

Trump said this week that the US and Israel’s campaign had been so successful that he considered it “largely over in [the first] two or three days”. Yet Iran continues to inflict widespread damage across the Gulf, escalating a regional war into a global energy crisis.

And on Friday, Trump said the US was “very close” to meeting its objectives as he considered “winding down” the war.
