Chris Bryant had only gone to Cannes to talk about Donald Trump. Britain’s culture minister arrived at the Mediterranean resort in May 2025 to find the world’s film industry convulsed in fear that Trump might be about to impose tariffs on their movies. And then he got an unexpected call.

Rachida Dati, his stylish French counterpart, wanted to see him at her seafront hotel. When he arrived, Dati seemed excited to break some news. But first she wanted him down on bended knee.

“You have to propose marriage to me,” Dati instructed.
