US and Iran sign deal as Donald Trump vows to release frozen funds and ease sanctions

President says Tehran will receive incentives when they ‘behave’ and acknowledges it will keep ballistic missiles

The US and Iran have electronically signed an interim deal that extends their ceasefire and offers concessions to the Islamic republic that have drawn criticism from Donald Trump’s Republican Party.

A US official confirmed the president signed the memorandum of understanding in Versailles, France, on Wednesday after he had said Washington would release frozen Iranian funds and lift sanctions “as soon as they behave”.

“We have taken their money, it’s their money,” Trump said at the G7 summit as he defended the MoU his administration has agreed with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. “If we didn’t give it back, nobody would ever invest in the dollar again.”
