Fifa opens door to amending controversial stake sale plan

Football body reaffirms commitment to bringing in external investors despite widespread opposition

Fifa says it remains “committed” to spinning out a commercial entity and selling a stake to external investors, while opening the door to amending its plans in the face of fierce opposition from across football.

World football’s governing body announced its intention to set up Fifa Forward Enterprise and sell a 20 per cent stake in the new venture on Tuesday. The deal, spearheaded by Fifa president Gianni Infantino, would value the new commercial entity at $20bn.

But opposition to the plan has been fierce and growing. On Thursday, the 55 members of Uefa, which runs the game in Europe, said they would boycott all Fifa competitions, including the World Cup, in protest unless Fifa abandoned the plan “in its entirety”.
