Indian demand for night-time air conditioning to cope with sweltering temperatures is pushing up after-dark electricity use, testing the limits of the country’s renewable power push.
Summer night-time temperatures in the world’s most populous country have risen about twice as fast as those in the day, according to the International Energy Agency, with temperatures that can approach 30C across the country.
“The floor burns even at night,” said Rajash Pakalwar, an air conditioning retailer in the central Indian city of Nagpur, whose sales have climbed 50 per cent this year. “We need to plan better for extreme heat.”
