During a warm summer week in central Connecticut this year, US professional golf seemed to be in a good place as more than 100,000 fans showed up to the Travelers Championship tournament in June to support some of the best players in the world.
Local volunteers in bright red polo shirts cheerfully directed players, spectators and media around the grounds at the PGA Tour event. Television ratings hit highs and millions of dollars were raised for local charities, which all sides were happy to trumpet.
Still, that same week, the tour’s new boss, recruited from the National Football League a year earlier, announced a shake-up for a sport that has long celebrated its continuity but has been racked by turmoil for the past five years.
