Almost 4.5m people regularly find work through online platforms in England and Wales, according to new research that found that the gig economy workforce has trebled in the last five years.
Surveys conducted by the consultancy Britain Thinks and the University of Hertfordshire, and published by the Trades Union Congress on Friday, showed three in 20 adults found work through online platforms at least once a week in 2021 — up from one in 20 in 2016.
This growth was driven by the rapid expansion of driving and delivery work for platforms such as Uber and Deliveroo, with almost 9 per cent of the workforce carrying out this kind of work in 2021 — up from 1.9 per cent in 2016.
