The UK hit a record 78,610 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the highest number of positive tests since the Covid-19 pandemic began, prompting the government’s chief medical adviser to warn against social mixing.
Chris Whitty urged the public not to “mix with people you don’t have to”, adding: “People should be prioritising only those things that really matter to them.”
The warning will intensify business leaders’ fears that the government is presiding over “lockdown by stealth” and heighten pressure on ministers to provide a new package of government aid for sectors including hospitality, retail and travel.
