Their Russian opponents hunted for them, looking for tattoos that would identify Ukrainian men as ex-military, and scouring lists — compiled with the help of local collaborators — of potential leaders in the Ukrainian resistance.
Many were caught, but those that survived are now part of a new strategy for the outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian military. With a stalemate on the front line that stretches across the country, Kyiv is trying to reach behind it into territory held by Moscow to “knock at least [a] few teeth out of the Russian bite”, according to one Ukrainian official.
