Biden says he was ‘surprised’ by discovery of documents at think-tank

US president says authorities were ‘immediately’ notified about materials from his time as vice-president

Joe Biden said he was “surprised” by the discovery of classified documents from his time as vice-president at his former office at a Washington think-tank, as he sought to contain a furore over his handling of the materials.

The US president made his first public comments on the documents on Tuesday in Mexico City after a summit of North American leaders, defending his own conduct and that of his advisers.

“I was briefed about this discovery and was surprised to learn there were any government records that were taken there to that office,” Biden said. “But I don’t know what’s in the documents. My lawyers have not suggested I ask what they were.”
