The growth is a small bright spot for American higher education, which has lost its edge in attracting the most talented foreign students, as other countries, such as the UK and Canada, have boosted their investment in graduate education, and embarked on campaigns to recruit top domestic and international students.
According to the annual report of the Institute of International Education, the increase builds on a 3 per cent rise reported for last year. The total number of international students enrolled in US schools exceeds by 6 per cent the previous high reported in the 2002-03 academic year.
