Would you bet your future on a business that had already failed? Angus MacDonald, a publisher turned would- be recycling tycoon, is doing just that.
In a recession, all kinds of businesses go into receivership. Many disappear, but some fight on under their new owners, affording the buyer an alternative to building an enterprise from scratch.
Such is the hope that buoys Mr MacDonald. Attempting the same feat is Andrew Jardine, a former turnround consultant building a business portfolio out of a warehouse venture saved from receivership. They have switched sector, but others seize opportunities that arise in an area they know: Les Meikle gambled his redundancy package to take the helm of a rescued competitor in 1996.
