VIRTUE OF THRIFT HELPS CONVINCE CONSUMERS

When Lin Wenzheng comes home, he is bathed in sweat. The 74-year-old lives on the fifth floor of a building without a lift, and Nanjing, China's capital before the Communist revolution, is known as one of the country's “four furnaces” for its sweltering summer heat.

But Mr Lin insists he will not set his air conditioner to below 26°C to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “This will influence the entire world. It is directly related to the survival of humankind,” says the retired mechanic.

“I can start helping by contributing my personal little bit.”
