Stéphane Richard, France Telecom's new chief executive, cuts a different figure from his predecessor, Didier Lombard.
The somewhat shy Mr Lombard, 68, is a former telecoms engineer who delights in playing with technology. Smooth-talking Mr Richard, 48, is an entrepreneur who made a fortune when a property business he led took a stock market listing.
He will probably need all his charm as he tries to draw a line under the crisis at France Telecom that was unleashed by a spate of suicides.
