David Cameron, leader of Britain's opposition Conservatives, yesterday attempted to strike a coalition deal with the centrist Liberal Democrats, in an effort to create a stable government capable of tackling the UK's £163bn ($241bn) deficit.
Mr Cameron believes a coalition would be in “the national interest” and dispatched a team of senior colleagues to talk to the Lib Dems in more than six hours of power-sharing talks.
Both sides say they want an outline agreement within 24 hours to reassure financial markets, after last week's general election produced a hung parliament, a rarity in British politics.
