Vince Cable, the UK business secretary, has hailed a deal to allow Britain to export pigs to China as part of the coalition government’s drive to prove Britain is “open for business”.
Rather than deals for billions of pounds of high technology exports or green innovations, the first fruit of the “partnership for growth” to be fostered by this week’s heavyweight UK trade mission to China is the export of a few breeding pigs.
Monday’s deal to allow live pig exports to China for the first time in three years is expected to eclipse other pig-related exports, such as licences for Peppa Pig, the cartoon character, and bring new business of up to £45m ($72.6m) over the next five years.
