Ten Chinese and Indian airlines have refused to tell the European Union how much carbon dioxide they emitted last year, in the most serious sign yet of a refusal to comply with Brussels’ move to charge carriers for their pollution.
The airlines – two from India and eight from China – could face fines unless they respond to requests to provide the data by the middle of June, and potentially a ban from flying to the bloc if they continue to flout its rules.
Dozens of countries, including the US and Russia, have attacked Brussels for making all airlines flying into the EU subject to its carbon emissions trading scheme from this year.
