China yesterday placed a $4bn order for Airbus’s wide-body passenger jets that had previously been held up by Beijing’s objections to EU plans to make foreign airlines pay for their carbon pollution.
Toulouse-based Airbus announced that China had signed an agreement to buy 18 A330 wide-body jets as François Hollande, France’s president, started an official visit to China.
The deal is the first breakthrough on Chinese orders for the A330 since Airbus went public last year with concerns over the negative impact of including foreign airlines in the EU emissions trading scheme to tackle carbon pollution.
