Chinese newspaper issues apology over reporter’s Zoomlion stories

A Chinese newspaper at the centre of a storm about press freedom apologised on Sunday after a reporter admitted to being paid to write damaging stories about a big domestic manufacturing company.

New Express, a Guangdong paper that ran a bold campaign last week demanding that police release Chen Yongzhou, ran a front-page apology on Sunday after the reporter confessed to fabricating stories about Zoomlion, China’s second-largest construction equipment maker, for fame and money.

“A preliminary police investigation showed that our reporter Chen Yongzhou had been incited by others to write numerous inaccurate stories in exchange for money,” New Express said on Sunday.
